Passport in Time
The USFS has free workshops that are great! They are called Passport In Time (PIT) The one we did last summer was called "Following the Smoke" It was a week of camping with the Karuk indigenous people of Northern Calif. During the week they taught us basketry, medicinal plant usage, showed us ceremonial spots, shared meals with us, performed their "brush dance" and much more. In return, those who wanted to helped them prepare materials for making baskets and got an area ready for the traditional fall burn to help the basketry plants grow straight.
This free class is held one time each summer. A limited number of applicants are accepted. Deadline to apply is sometime in the spring. They love it when teachers apply because they know we'll go back and share this information with our students. Two AEOE members attended: Lisa Curnett of Camp Campbell & Steffani La Zier of Sly Park. Feel free to contact us with questions. We both recommend it.
