Nearly every university and community college offers courses in natural history, which support professional development in environmental education. ENSP 325. Natural Resources and Environmental Interpretation (3)
(Spring) Merriman
Introduction to the land steward governmental agencies such as parks, watersheds, wilderness areas, forests, reserves and nonprofit preserves at the national, state, and local levels. Career planning, applied field work, and student projects are required, including use of interpretive techniques such as nature walks, slide and film presentations, and children's programs to educate the public about the value and wise use of natural resources.

ENSP 408. Classroom Garden (1)
(Spring) Department Faculty
Development of curriculum materials and teaching techniques to utilize school and community gardens as outdoor classrooms. Curriculum materials will relate to such topics as plant identification, growth cycles, photosynthesis, soils and nutrients, nutrition, insects, predator/prey relationships, pesticides, and soil and water pollution. Lesson plans suitable for elementary school level will be developed.

ENSP 430. Environmental Education (3)
(Fall) Rohwedder
Course is designed to introduce the scope and purpose of environmental education, critique existing materials, and investigate program options for schools and education centers. Educational and interpretive techniques are interrelated throughout the course. Field study and one overnight field trip. This course is a prerequisite to ENSP 440. Class fee required at time of registration.

ENSP 440. Environmental Education Techniques (2-3)
(Spring) Rohwedder
An advanced course in environmental education to build upon the fundamental theory and techniques presented in ENSP 430. The focus is on delivery techniques, tools, and technologies. The course includes analysis of recent developments in national and international programs, curriculum development and implementation, and delivery technology, including interactive videodiscs, telecommunications, and various methods of computer-related instruction. Cr/NC only. Prerequisite: ENSP 430 or consent of instructor.

TED 5413 Environmental Education in the Curriculum (4)
Integration of environmental concepts into total school curriculum. Methods for outdoor teaching; development of individual and group projects using school grounds, nature areas, and parks as laboratories. Review of available curricula: pre-school, secondary, and adult education.

TED 5414 Field Trips and Community Resources for Environmental Education (4)
Organization of environmental educational field trips; identification and application of teaching resources available from agencies, organizations, and industry.

TED 6414 Organization of Resident Outdoor Education (4)
Problems and solutions for implementation, e.g., site, staff, health, finance, permission. Preparation, program, and classroom followup. Overnight field trip (fee about $15). Prerequisite: TED 5413 or consent of instructor.

TED 6416 Development of Environmental Education (4)
History, needs, conceptual framework, trends and types of programs in the United States and the world. Review of literature and dissertations and masters' theses. Prerequisites: TED 5413, or consent of instructor.

TED 6417 Field Study in Environmental Education (4)
Individual leadership experience in an environmental education program. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

179. Environmental Interpretation. S
The theory and practice of environmental interpretation in parks, museums, and school programs with special attention to multicultural environmental education and children. Students will work to define their own interpretive philosophy, skills, and style. Background in natural history and/or experience working with children recommended. Preference given to juniors. Prerequisites: satisfaction of the Subject A requirement; satisfaction of the campus general education requirement for a composition course; course 100. Concurrent enrollment in course 179L required. 179L. Environmental Interpretation Laboratory (2 credits). S
Students are placed with local interpretive agencies eight hours per week where they apply what they are learning in class including the structure, mechanics, and style of interpretation as well as the natural history of the interpretive site. This lab is a co-requisite with course 179. Prerequisites: concurrent enrollment in course 179. J. Anderson
